Here are my Tidy Tips to achieve an organized and stylish closet.
I. Sleeve Length – Organize clothes from right to left by sleeve length within the assigned zone. For example, sleeveless should be first, followed by short sleeve, and long sleeve.
II. Color Coordinations – Color coordinating is key, once you have organized by length follow the rainbow colors to arrange the items. Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue…
III. Create categories – I use the term zones for my categories within a closet a zone will include dresses, blouses, shirts, skirts, pants, and jackets. When belongings have designated zones, outfit selections are made easier. The additional benefit is that unnecessary spending is reduced because you know what you own. Have you ever returned from a shopping trip to learn you already own the item you purchased?
IV. Fabric – Each zone should have items grouped by fabric. For example: cotton, wool, mix blends, and silk. When arranging by fabrics you naturally create zones by occasion. Silk typically is formal while cotton is casual.
V. Length – Wardrobe selections are more efficient when you arrange clothing by length. This means within the dress category, shorter dresses should be first followed by longer lengths. The benefit is the ability to easily view your clothing
VI. Style -Allow your closet to represent your personal style by adding subtle design details. If space is available include a piece of art or floral arrangement.
VII. Edit – The organizing process creates a perfect opportunity to access your clothing. Take this time to let go of items you have not worn or do not love. During a closet project I ask my clients the following questions.
- When was the last time you worn this?
- Do you love it?
I always bring two containers with me during a project, one labeled “Donate” and the other labeled “Sell”. During the editing process, if a client has not worn an items in over six months and does not love it, we decide if it should be donated or sold.
Once a closet project is completed, I find my clients feel a sense of calmness, happiness, and comfort. I have learned that when we eliminate clutter we honor our home creating a space that is welcoming radiates pride, serenity, joy, relaxation, and comfort.
Clutter creates stress, anxiety, frustration, and the feeling of being overwhelmed. According to Feng Shui principles, clutter drains positive energy and harmony.
